Sarah, at Loving the Book Launch Party, share this warning about their situation:
Can I Keep My Profile Instead of Starting a Page?
It's against the Facebook Terms to use your personal account to represent something other than yourself (ex: your business). If you're using your account to represent something other than yourself, you could permanently lose access to your account if you don't convert it to a Page. Learn how to convert your personal account to a Page.
If you're a public figure, learn about allowing followers.
Basically, you can still have a profile page as an author, and people can friend/follow you, but if you post anything business related Facebook can delete your profile without warning! There are many really good reasons for this, (mostly for privacy and your own marketing purposes) but I'll get into that another time.
So, if you're currently using your Facebook profile for anything business related, like advertising your books, please hurry and convert your profile to a page OR just start a new page and invite your followers to like it. Better to take care of it now, before you have to start all over again! Besides, every serious author needs a Facebook page.
What Does this Mean and How Will This Effect Me?
- Post updates about your work as long as you're not posting links/saying where to buy it
- Invite Facebook friends to groups and events like book launches.
- Post pictures, stories, etc.
I'll be posting more about using Facebook soon. In the meantime, sign up for my email updates so you'll be in the loop!
